Our Story

When Daniel B McCarthy (Dennis’ Grandfather) started Glades Gas Company in 1929 in Okeechobee, he offered the Okeechobee housewife a luxury which had not been available to her previously.  She was now able to have refrigerators powered by propane in her home!

Land on North Parrott Avenue was purchased and the business was moved from Dan’s garage to the current location of Glades AC.

Indiantown Gas Company came into the fold.  Dan basically adopted Timer Powers and he ran that office.

In 1948, Dan's oldest daughter Kathleen McCarthy and her husband Vernon Dexter (Dex) came to Florida from Utah and the Belle Glade office was opened on Ave A in 1955.

The Clewiston and Belle Glade office began offering central air conditioning services, affording people central air conditioning over window units.

They also added appliances between 1953 and 1954 and ice machines in the late 60’s.

Florida Public Utilities acquired the gas side of Glades Gas of Okeechobee and Clewiston.

Indiantown Gas sold to Suburban Gas.

The Belle Glade office continues to operate the gas and air conditioning side and now offer services all around Lake Okeechobee in every direction.

We cannot predict what the next chapter for Glades Gas will be.   Our mission is to carry on what Great Granddaddy McCarthy started in 1929;
